DOST-industry-academe tie up to poise local metalworks and electronics for local demand and global competition PDF Print E-mail

Metalworks and allied sectors machinery and electronics will now get the very important push they need to slug it out in the global arena. Through the program called “MakiBayan” or Makina at Teknolohiya para sa Bayan, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) along with industry giants and the academe will work together to poise the industries into addressing local demand and global competition.

This partnership is formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed by DOST Secretary Mario G. Montejo on April 16 in Bella Ibarra, Quezon City with leaders of the metal and electronics sectors, with collaboration coming from  a consortium of top-notch engineering schools.

Industry associations involved in the tie-up include the Electronics Industry Association of the Philippines, Inc. (EIAPI), the Metalworking Industry Association of the Philippines (MIAP), and the Philippine Die and Mold Association (PDMA).

The academic consortium, meanwhile, is the Engineering Research and Development for Technology (ERDT) which is currently led by the University of the Philippines Diliman. The ERDT consortium consists of eight engineering schools from Ateneo de Manila University, Central Luzon State University, De La Salle University, Mapua Institute of Technology, Mindanao State University-Iligan, UP Diliman, UP Los Baños, and University of San Carlos.

The MakiBayan program unites the government, the private sector, and the academe to advance a more enabling environment for the metalworks, machinery and electronics industries by the sharing of technology, expertise, skills, manpower and facilities among the partners.

Through a collaborative research and development (R&D) roadmap, MakiBayan serves as an avenue for the government-private-academe triumvirate to frame all its plans, projects, and milestones from 2012 to year 2016. This is expected to propel the metalworks, machinery and electronics industries toward newer heights of competitiveness both in the local and global markets.

“The country should have a strong, vibrant metalworking and electronic sector for it industrialize and modernize,” said DOST Secretary Montejo.

DOST nuclear experts say do not be alarmed over NoKor satellite launch PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 05 April 2012 04:38

Experts at the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PNRI) stressed that there is no reason for the public to be alarmed in the event the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) or North Korea launches to orbit its earth observation satellite “Kwangmyongsong-3” on April 12 and 16 which many analysts say is a ballistic missile test.

The United States and its allies described the planned rocket launch of the DPRK as a ballistic missile test in disguise of a satellite launch.

According to PNRI Director Alumanda De la Rosa, the information gathered by the Institute states that the tests will not involve any nuclear material.

However, she said that PNRI will activate the Radiation Monitoring team under the Radiological Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan  in case the debris from these tests will  fall into the country’s territory. PNRI will make some measurements to ensure that these are not radioactive debris.

“According to information that we have, DPRK will only launch its satellite, but we will send our team to check if there may have been radioactive components present in the debris,” explained Director De la Rosa.

She also advised the people not to touch the debris and cordon off the site until experts arrive.

Moreover, Director De la Rosa said that PNRI will continue air measurements for radioactivity in Metro Manila before and after the DPRK rocket launches but maintains that it is the agency’s routine job to monitor daily the ambient gamma radiation in the air.

“As part of our program, DOST-PNRI will continue to monitor the radiation levels present in the environment, “ said Director dela Rosa.

The Philippine government has expressed concern over the purported missile test launches in the Korean peninsula. Information gathered by the Department of Foreign Affairs states that the rocket’s first stage will reportedly separate and fall in a zone -140 kilometers west of Republic of Korea’s Byeonsan Peninsula, while the second stage is expected to fall in an area 190 kilometers east of Luzon.(Joy M. The Department of Science and Technology - Information and Communications Technology Office of (DOST-ICTO) presented Balik-Scientist Raul H. Manongdo a certificate of appreciation for his work in ICT under the Balik-Scientist Program of the DOST.  Raul H. Manongdo is an Australian based ICT expert who has 25 years of experience in the field of database development and database administration.

As a Balik Scientist, Mr. Manongdo worked with the DOST-ICTO on developing and conducting  Database Administration Course . He also served as consultant  in developing the Government Interoperability Framework, an essential component of the iGov project which aims to integrate existing government systems to hasten the delivery of services to the public.

Manongdo likewise conducted a three-day workshop to enhance the skills of National Computer Center (NCC) and Advance Science Technological Institute  IT practitioners in database development using Oracle 11G. The Oracle Database, commonly referred to as Oracle RDBMS or simply as Oracle, is an object-relational database management system  produced and marketed by Oracle Corporation.
