SCIENCE FOR RESILIENCE - INNOVATIONS FOR DISASTER RISK REDUCTION AND MANAGEMENT

The Science For Resilience book narrates some of the selected technologies that helped shape Filipino resilience. The book uncovers the realities, challenges, and inspirations behind the technologies developed. It also lays the foundation of the situation of the country and the innovations in terms of (i) early warning systems, (ii) human-built physical infrastructure and settlements, (iii) environment, water, and agriculture, and (iv) transportation and energy. It aims to underscore the value of robust and advanced disaster innovations and technologies for the Philippines.

Let this book explore innovation as a pathway towards resilience. This book is DOST's way of sharing the why’s and the how’s. For DOST, science is always for the people.

SCIENCE FOR INNOVATION

This book breaks down the strategy that fresh graduates, entrepreneurs, and companies alike can use to bring an idea to market: the process of business incubation. Featuring stories of companies at various stages, Science for Innovation promotes technopreneurship and highlights the advantages of joining a technology business incubator (TBI), the Department of Science and Technology’s very own Technology Business Incubator program, and the collaboration between the academe, industry, the government and private sector, while focusing on essential lessons for students, entrepreneurs or managers to take away.

SCIENCE FOR HUMAN CAPITAL

To spark the Filipino youth’s interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), Science for Human Capital features the success stories of DOST-SEI Scholars, and the research and development projects they’ve contributed to that should be a source of national pride. It also aims to engage decision-makers and stakeholders by highlighting the wins of S&T human resource development in the country as a whole, with sections devoted to S&T HRD history, the Philippine Science High School System, and the Science Education Institute in the new normal.

SCIENCE FOR COOPERATION

This book reflects the importance of international collaborations in the S&T sector, including the advantages of Science and Technology bilateral and multilateral linkages with examples of the significant achievements in the history of science diplomacy. It includes international associations of the DOST, and the collaborative activities undertaken by the department with international partners. It also highlights the innovations and STI initiatives conducted through international cooperation.

SCIENCE FOR COMMUNITIES

Science and technology can empower communities. This book tells the stories of those who took part in Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) programs for human resource development, economic development, disaster risk reduction and management, environmental protection and conservation, and health and nutrition, and succeeded through the help of local partners. Each story and the summary of lessons and policy recommendations towards the end of the book will emphasize collaboration to reflect the DOST’s way of working with others to accomplish win-win situations using shared resources, whether funds, personnel, or materials.

SCIENCE FOR CHANGE

The Department of Science and Technology has recognized the challenges of the country’s limitations in science, technology, and innovation and, as a result, implemented the Science for Change Program in 2016. This book breaks down the program's four components that promote inclusive innovation, R&D expertise, applications, and collaborations between the government, the academe, and the private sector.

DOST Innovations: Web and Mobile Applications in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management

The "DOST Innovations: Web and Mobile Applications in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management" compendium presents the important role of science and technology in resilience building. This book describes how web and mobile applications help us understand risks and how we can all contribute in preventing, preparing, responding, and recovering from disasters. The innovations are developed for everyone- individuals, communities, private groups and businesses, organizations, and government leaders. This book serves as a guide among stakeholders to use these applications and to advocate the use of scientific data in planning and decision-making.

Evaluation of the DOST Genomics Program

The DOST Genomics Program, assessed by the US Embassy Science Fellows led by Dr. Sally O'Connor, was found to have effectively managed research grants and had a positive impact in areas such as human health, crops and livestock, forestry, and aquatic resources. The program's translation of basic research into practical products has resulted in successful startups and policy development. Furthermore, the program has played a crucial role in pandemic response, including public surveillance of outbreaks, tracking of virus variants, and influencing policy to prevent further spread of SARS CoV2.

DOST-PCAARRD eLibrary

To efficiently and promptly disseminate and share AANR and other science and technology (S&T) information 24/7 to the grassroots of the society, the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has shifted from traditional library operations to a digital library.

The e-Library is recognized as one of the knowledge management tools to capture, codify, share, and apply PCAARRD’s generated knowledge products and resources. With information on the agriculture, aquatic, and natural resources (AANR) sector vital particularly to the agenda of poverty alleviation, PCAARRD, through the assistance of the Science and Technology Information Institute of DOST, has developed a library management system designed to facilitate efficient and prompt dissemination, sharing, exchange, preservation, access, and retrieval of its resources.

The PCAARRD knowledge network of libraries has been established through customization and deployment of the Science Library Integrated Management System (SLIMS) to the Council’s research and development (R&D) consortia for a more effective management and content development of the e-library.

PCAARRD is one of the sectoral councils of the DOST, which is mandated to formulate policies, plans, and programs for science and technology-based R&D in the different sectors under its concern. It coordinates, evaluates, and monitors the national R&D efforts AANR sector. It also allocates government and external funds for R&D and generates resources to support its program.
