DAVAO ORIENTAL– The Department of Science and Technology Region XI (DOST-XI) continues to lead the way in battling the adverse effects of climate change and strengthening the disaster preparedness efforts of the people in Davao Region by relying on the power of science, technology, and innovation.

Through its Provincial Science and Technology Center in Davao Oriental (PSTC DO), DOST-XI successfully conducted the training on Breadfruit Propagation and Seedling Distribution held last 7 October 2021 at the Municipal Hall, Tarragona, Davao Oriental.

The activity was participated in by key personnel from the Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO), the Municipal Mayor's Office and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources (MENRO) of Tarragona Davao Oriental who spearheaded the propagation of breadfruit in their locality.

Breadfruit is a resilient crop and bears fruit that is normally consumed for subsistence in many Pacific countries. It was found to be a good source of food especially during natural calamities since it is easily accessible.

Dino M. Gulane, the trainer from the Green Landscape Care and Maintenance Services, highlighted the benefits of breadfruit as it is rich in carbohydrates and a good source of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. During the training session, Gulane also demonstrated several techniques of cloning for more efficient propagation such as marcotting, grafting, and root cutting.

A total of 50 breadfruit seedlings were also distributed to LGU Tarragona as part of the interventions under the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) Program of DOST-XI in the municipality of Tarragona Davao Oriental. This activity caters to the need of enhancing Disaster Risk Reduction and Management initiatives of the community which is one of the entry points of the CEST Program. (DOST XI S&T Information and Promotion)
