DOST Council marks half a decade of innovative S&T

In celebration of the Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD) 5th anniversary, Undersecretary Dr. Rowena Cristina Guevara, together with otherresource persons, presented the Council’s milestones in a press conference held recently at the Luxent Hotel in Quezon City.
“We are one of the best agencies in the DOST system and will continue to be the best,” USec. Guevarra assured guests as she showcased each of PCIEERD’s accomplishments within half a decade since its establishment in 2010.

Pioneering research on Benham Rise among topics in DOST presscon on agri-aqua projects

From May 3-18, 2014, Filipino scientists aboard the research vessel M/V BFAR conducted oceanographic exploration and surveys at Benham Bank, the shallowest area of Benham Rise with a depth of 50 meters. The objective was to determine the resources available in the territory for future economic benefits.
The initiative, dubbed “Exploration, Mapping, and Assessment of Deep Water Areas,” was funded by the Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD).
It was a collaboration of the UP Marine Science Institute, UP National Institute of Geological Sciences, UPLB – School of Environmental Science and Management, and Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources. The project was likewise backed by researchers, scientists and seasoned dive specialists from UP Mindanao, UP Baguio, Xavier University, Ateneo de Manila University and the local diving industry.

SIPAG ni Juan: PCAARD’s S&T interventions in aggie, aqua sectors

The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD), during the celebration of the National Science and Technology Week, will showcase its innovations in agriculture, aquatic and natural resources that will raise the agri sector’s productivity to world-class standards.
PCAARRD will give the media a peep into said innovations at the 2015 NSTW Outcome One Press Conference on July 3, 9AM at Sulo Riviera Hotel, Diliman, Quezon City. The press conference, bearing the theme Strategic Industry Program for Agri-Aqua Growth (SIPAG) ni Juan, will focus on PCAARRD’s Industry Strategic S&T Plans (ISPs) on some agri-aqua-natural resources commodities such as banana, goat, Benham rise, mud crab, plant growth promoters, and abaca.
DOST’s Outcome One focuses on raising the productivity of the agriculture sector.

VEHICLE FOR FLOODS MAKES WAVES IN DOST CONTEST

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) awarded the 1st Runner-up prize for the Student Creative Research Category - College Level of the Regional Invention Contest and Exhibit (RICE) - Region VII to the innovative transport vehicle called Amphibious Trisikad in a ceremony held recently at Cebu City Marriot Hotel. A redesigned tricycle that can be used on land and water especially during floods, the Amphibious Trisikad is composed of the frame, driving mechanism, paddle wheels and detachable floater. It was developed by Jesse Pastor Magno, Hembrick Palmitos and Kenn Edward Mirasol from the University of San Carlos. Other RICE winners and entries as well as DOST’s initiatives on disaster preparedness will be featured in the National Science and Technology Week on July 24-28, 2015 at the SMX Convention Center, SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City.
