news irradiation to enhance plant growth1 07292016
By irradiating a seaweed called carrageenan, experts found that the resulting product  becomes an effective plant growth enhancer (collected in the blue plastic containers) that can be mixed with commercial fertilizers. Field tests have shown that using irradiated carrageenan can increase rice yield up to 65 percent. The process is done at the Electron Beam Irradiation Facility of the Department of Science and Technology –Philippine Nuclear Research Institute.

The exhibits is part of the ongoing open house exhibit at the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute in Diliman, Quezon City as part of the simultaneous celebration of the 2016 National Science and Technology Week that runs July 25-29, 2016. The displays and tour of the PNRI facilities enabled the students and teachers to know of the many benefits of nuclear energy and radiation. The Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) gave DOST scholars from UP Diliman, Ateneo de Manila University, and Rizal Technological University a free ride to the stars and the heavens via a forum dubbed “TEC TALK: Space Science” at the UP Diliman-National Institute of Physics (UPD-NIP) last July 27, 2016. TEC (Technology, Education, Culture) TALK is one of the activities in the ongoing National Science and Technology Week (NSTW). Insert photo shows the resource persons: (from left) Dr. Ian Vega, gravity group head of UPD-NIP’s theoretical physics group; Dr. Rogel Mari Sese of DOST’s Philippine Space Science Education Program; Dr. Jose Perico Esguerra, professor and theoretical physics group coordinator of UPD-NIP; and DOST Balik Scientist Dr. Apollo Arquiza of Cornell University. Arquiza has worked at the International Space Station, studying foods for astronauts. The speakers shared their amazing career journeys and inspiring works in space science. They also mesmerized the students with interesting discussions of black holes, alternative theories of gravity, Big Bang Theory, motion of stars, space cooking, and space education, among others. The forum aimed to encourage the youth to take up careers in the field and open their eyes to the significance of space science in national and global progress.
