A group of students from the National University of Singapore (NUS) visited the Forest Products Research and Development Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-FPRDI) last 5 January 2024 to learn and talk about possible collaborations involving the institute’s Bamboo Musical Instruments (BMI) Innovation R&D Program.
The trip was part of their academic course that requires students to craft and implement capstone projects that will “promote positive social impact to a community in need.” Focusing on the Arts and Design cluster, the students are exploring the possibility of training out-of-school youth on BMI making.
The students were met by DOST-FPRDI OIC-Director Dr. Rico J. Cabangon, BMI Program Leader Forester Aralyn Q. Cortiguerra, and Technical Services Division’s Forester Zenaida R. Reyes.

The DOST Day Care Center will be transformed into a highly conducive learning facility for children,” remarked Ms. Bea Torres, Director of the National Book Store (NBS) Foundation, during the Kickoff Ceremony of the partnership between the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and NBS on December 15, 2023, at the DOST Day Care Center (DDCC) in Bicutan, Taguig City.
The DDCC was founded on August 1, 1997 in support of Executive Order No. 340, 1997, directing national government agencies and government-owned and controlled corporations to provide Day Care Services for their employees’ children under five years of age. Since then, the institution has produced graduates who are well-equipped for their education.
It aims to offer a high-quality gender-responsive S&T preschool education that works collaboratively with parents and ensures that every preschooler learns and grows in a nurturing, fun, and safe environment, setting the foundation for a lifelong love of education and success in school and life.

In an era marked by incessant distractions, the art of respecting and valuing one another's time often takes a back seat, which may cause, in some instances, inconvenience to both parties. The pressing demands of modern life, coupled with a myriad of diversions, contribute to the oversight of responsible time management. The consequence, however, extends beyond the individual level, impacting relationships with family, friends, partners, and coworkers in ways often underestimated.
Recognizing the critical need for a cultural shift towards time consciousness, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is set to take the lead, once more, in promoting the National Time Consciousness Week (NTCW) in 2024. From January 1 to 7, under the resonating theme "G na G! Oras Pinas para sa Bagong Pilipinas," the DOST aims to synchronize all timepieces across the nation, creating a unified commitment to punctuality and respect for each other’s time.
