The Department of Science and Technology, through the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SET-UP), funded more than PhP114 million worth of projects for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in 2009, according to SET-UP report.

The report identified the 120 approved projects for MSMEs in 2009. SET-UP likewise processed 331 proposals for the year, with a total amount of  PhP211,480,420.90.

Among the priority sectors, food tops the list of approved projects for MSMEs, while horticulture/agriculture and metals/engineering tie in second place. Furniture, and gifts, housewares, and decoration (GHD) came in third and fourth respectively, followed by aquatic/marine.

The Philippine Council for Advanced Science and Technology Research and Development  (PCASTRD) of the Department of Science and Technology recently awarded winners in the 2009 PCASTRD Outstanding Thesis and Dissertation Awards in Advanced S&T.

Clinching the awards in the dissertation category are Proceso L. Fernandez, Jr. of the Ateneo de Manila University for “On the complexities of the block sorting and Poset cover problems” (Computer Science and IT) and Gay Jane P. Perez of the University of the Philippines Diliman for “Understanding the dynamics of unassisted group egress” (Physics).  Advisers are Dr. John Paul C. Vergara and Dr. Caesar A. Saloma, respectively. Fernandez and Perez received a plaque and P75,000 each while their advisers received P25,000 each. Meanwhile, all finalists received P25,000 each.

The Philippines through the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) have recently signed an Expression of Interest, a document that formalizes reciprocal scientific, technical and educational activities on the basis of reciprocity between the two institutions.

The Expression of Interest is the first step towards furthering joint scientific researches, mentoring, and technical trainings to boost human capacity in the field of physics in the country.

The initiative opens opportunities for Filipino physicists to complete their postgraduate studies in European Universities participating in the CERN research program. Moreover, vital summer programs and other training programs on Physics and Science Education for Filipino Science teachers are being organized.

The Department of Science and Technology’s Technology Application and Promotion Institute recently awarded the winners of this year’s National Invention Contest and Exhibits.

Bagging the Outstanding Invention or the Tuklas Award were the Crop Processing Machine by Arnulfo Malinios, Eleanor Balute, Estrella Calpe, and Herminigildo Lizano, all from Polangui, Albay (first prize); Rex Compost Tea Brewer (A Novel compost tea brewer) by James Fos Reamon (second prize); and Manufacturing Process for Hard Carrageenan Capsules by the Industrial and Technology Development Institute – DOST (third prize). The winners received cash prizes of PhP150, 000; PhP 100,000; and PhP 50,000 respectively.

In addition to the cash prize, Outstanding Invention Crop Processing Machine also received the World Intellectual Property Office Gold Medal.

Meanwhile, the winners of the Outstanding Utility Model were Method of Making Engine Oil Additive Mixed with Plant Oils by Johnny Sy (first place); Production of Medical Bandage from Mushroom Mycelium by Claro Santiago, Jr. of ITDI-DOST (second place);  and Mechanical Process of Producing Starch and Flour from Arrowroot Tubers by Arnulfo Malinis, Christopher Pacardo and Salvador Albia (third place). Winners pocketed cash prizes of PhP 100,000; PhP 50,000; PhP 25,000 respectively.
