With less than a month to go, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has formally released the complete list of activities that will be featured during the first ever virtual celebration of the 2020 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) from 23 to 29 November.

DOST gets 284 M funding for Virology Institute in 2021

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will get 284 million worth of funding in 2021 for the purchase of equipment and other needs that will be used to start research activities under the proposed Virology Science and Technology Institute of the Philippines (VIP).

4th Indie-Siyensya promotes science through film

With a lineup of finalists that effectively portrayed the contest theme, “Communities Beyond the Naked Eye,” determining the best films of the 4th Indie-Siyensya Filmmaking Competition was surely a tough task for the Board of Judges. In the end, though, the title of Best Film for the Open and Youth Categories was conferred to entries that went beyond the criteria of scientific content, idea execution, and film technique.
The judges referred to the fourth criterion as “impact.”
For this reason, the films “Into the Minuscule World of Ants” by Heinrich Domingo of Quezon, Isabela and “Sansala” by Cyah Angela Somblingo of the youth organization Focus Cavite were hailed as the Best Films in the Open and Youth Categories, respectively.
New and inexpensive test kits, alternative broadcast spectrum for distance learning highlight DOST report

A new device in detecting Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus or SARS-Cov-2, the virus that causes the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) is in the works while unused digital broadcast spectrum as alternative to datacasting to help in the distance learning were the highlight of the latest Department of Science and Technology (DOST) weekly report.
In his latest dispatch, DOST Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña said that the project will develop the microfluidic miniaturized PCR device (miPCR) for SARS-Cov-2 RNA amplification via FDA approved Covid-19 RT-PCR kits.
