For National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Academician Antonio Miguel L. Dans, no amount of health education or counselling can make people change their lifestyles to prevent non-communicable diseases (NCD) such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, COPD, and dementia.

Instead, Dr. Dans, a cardiologist and University of the Philippines College of Medicine professor, proposes making changes in the environment in order to make a person change his lifestyle and health status. Environment refers not only to things around people but also to policies that impact their lives.

Smarty (above photo), official mascot of the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) turned one year old during this year’s celebration of NSTW held last July at SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. Styled after the logo of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and taking the form of a bird, Smarty represents the “Smarter Philippines” thrust of DOST, organizer of the yearly NSTW. The mascot made its debut during the 2013 NSTW, appearing in most promotional materials for the event. Its success was replicated in this year’s edition of NSTW where kids and students grabbed the chance to have their photos taken with the lovable mascot (below). The mascot also appears in DOST’s quarterly publication, S&T Post, now in digital format downloadable in iPhones and iPods via Apple Newsstand. (S&T Media Service)

A student from Philippine Science High School smiles proudly beside his robotics project during the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) held recently at SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. His project was among an array of amazing robotic creations by high school students showcased during the Robotics Challenge – one of the interesting activities during NSTW. Aside from the Robotics Challenge, NSTW also featured various fora on science and technology topics, product launchings, interactive exhibits, audio-visual presentations, and others. Just a small space measuring 1 meter x 2. 5 meters with plenty of sunlight is enough for you to raise your fish and grow your veggies too. This system for farming fish and plants together, called aquaponics, was featured in the recently held National Science and Technology Week (NSTW). The fish waste provides the nutrients for the plants, while the plants filter the water for the fish. A pump is used to circulate the water from the fish tank (blue container) into the series of tubes where the plants are contained and back into the fish tank. The setup shown is best suited for raising tilapia, and other freshwater fish, and growing leafy vegetables such as pechay, lettuce, and kangkong. NSTW is a yearly initiative of the Department of Science and Technology and was held from July 24-28, 2014 at the SMX Convention Center. (S&T Media Service)
