Trying to muster composure, a farmer mentally recounts his earnings from the prior sale of the healthy finishers and the impending losses that is about to unfold right before his very eyes.

This horrendous sight is common among piggery farm owners as their animals experience bouts of gastrointestinal infections. Unfavorable incidents such as these, as experienced by our local swine producers, are replete with losses and economic impacts brought about by animal diseases. If only the pathogen has been detected before the animals exhibit the clinical symptoms, the battle can be considered as already half won.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Mario G. Montejo believes that this year’s celebration of National Science and Technology Week will prove that Filipino scientists can compete not only in Asia but throughout the rest of the world.

“Many of our scientists have carved major inroads in the field of S&T over the last two years, meriting recognition from the international science community,” Montejo said in a press conference last July 10, 2015 at Sulo Riviera Hotel in Quezon City.

ACE + FA Enterprises, a Laguna-based maker of wooden pallets, has been saving around P 80,000 a month for one year now.

How were they able to do this? It stopped renting the services of another company and now uses its own low-cost heat treatment facility (LHTF) to disinfect its pallets.

Designed by the Department of Science and Technology’s Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI), the LHTF provides the heat needed to kill insects and other pests infesting wood packaging materials such as wooden pallets.
