Academician Carmencita D. Padilla renewed her call for the passage of the rare diseases bill during the Science Legislative Forum organized by Department of Science and Technology-National Academy of Science and Technology (DOST-NAST) held recently at the Philippine International Convention Center.
Rare diseases are debilitating or life-threatening disorders that affect only a small segment of the population. An estimated 6,000 to 10,000 people in the Philippines are afflicted with a rare disease, most of them children.

Sec. Mario Montejo receives the title Datu Mahimugnanon as Bae Noreta Gabao, the keeper of the Tiguahanon, a Manobo culture from the northern tribe of Bukidnon, prays the Panubad-tubad for God to bestow upon Sec. Montejo the skills as datu. Mahimugnanon is from the Manobo word “mugma” which means “to create and innovate”, aptly describing the Secretary’s role as head of the Department of Science and Technology which spearheads innovations in research and development in the country. The conferment was officiated during the “Gabi ng Sining at Siyensya”, part of the Science Nation Tour, a nationwide information campaign that aims to make Filipinos, especially those in the countryside, “feel” science and technology integrated in their daily lives. DOST’s regional invention contest up at CDO

The Department of Science and Technology-Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI) is holding an invention contest at the Event Center of the LimKetKai Mall in Cagayan de Oro City with 78 entries vying for six categories.
“We are holding this biennial event in every region to give recognition to talents and inventors,” said Science Secretary Mario G. Montejo of the DOST-sponsored Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits or RICE.
An inventor himself who bagged a creative research award several years ago, Montejo firmly believes that local technology works.
Dry spell to hit 79 provinces by yearend, says DOST chief

Some 79 provinces will be hit by El Niño before 2015 ends, according to Sec. Mario G. Montejo of the Department of Science and Technology.
“The El Niño phenomenon will be at its worst this year, worse (El Niño) since 1997,” Sec. Montejo announced at Ozamiz City during the first step of the Science Nation Tour in Northern Mindanao last Aug 20.
Montejo said that starting September, 12 provinces will begin in to experience dry conditions that are below normal. “By October, dry spell and drought conditions will affect 29 provinces, and by the end of the year, the number will rise to 79,” he said.
