DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. delivers his keynote address during the opening of the “HANDA Pilipinas: Innovations in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Exposition” Mindanao leg, held on October 4, 2023 at the Limketkai Luxe Hotel in Cagayan de Oro.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) holds the first DRRM Technologies and Innovations Exposition in Mindanao, with the title “HANDA Pilipinas: Innovations in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Expo 2023 on 4 October 2023 at Cagayan de Oro City.

Eighty-one technologies from Filipino inventors and innovators throughout the country were presented.  These technologies were clustered according to the four thematic areas identified in the National Risk Reduction and Management Plan: Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Disaster Preparedness, Disaster Response, and Disaster Rehabilitation and Recovery.

Over the years, the Department of Science and Technology - Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII) has been providing capacity-building activities to students, media practitioners, academic researchers, and other professionals on various skills related to science communication. This is done through the implementation of the Science Journo Ako advocacy program.  

It allows them to learn how to popularize science and create engaging content on the practical benefits of various scientific applications and concepts and how they could impact the lives of every Filipino.

The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD) ushered in a new era of scientific excellence and innovation as it signed 35 Memoranda of Agreement (MOA) with new researchers on 5 October 2023. 

Project leaders and representatives from 35 implementing agencies came together to formalize their commitment to driving progress through science, technology, and innovation. This collective effort showcases the country's dedication to advancing industry, energy, and emerging technology sectors.

Department of Science and Technology Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. stresses the importance of preparedness through proper information to prevent natural hazards from becoming disasters, during the opening ceremonies of the 2023 Handa Pilipinas Exposition-Mindanao Leg held in Cagayan de Oro City on 04 October 2023.  

Several major disasters have struck Mindanao, including Tropical Storm Sendong in 2011, severe El Niño effects from 2015 to 2016, earthquakes in 2019, and heavy rainfall-related incidents in 2022. All these disasters resulted in a significant number of casualties and property damage. While these events were caused by natural hazards, does that mean a disaster will automatically occur?

The answer is no, according to Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. as he shared his insights and keynote message at the opening of the 2023 Handa Pilipinas: Innovations in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Exposition for the Mindanao Leg with the theme, “Enhancing Resilience and Sustainability for Mindanao” held on October 04, 2023 at the Limkektai Luxe Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City.
