The Top 20 contenders for the STARBOOKS Whiz Bee ponder their answers during the semifinals round of the competition held at Governor Ferrer Memorial Integrated National High School on September 28, 2023.
Students from Governor Ferrer Memorial Integrated National High School (GFMINHS) showcased their intellectual prowess during the first-ever Department of Science and Technology-Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII) STARBOOKS Whiz Bee in General Trias, Cavite.
"It was historic on the part of Governor Ferrer Memorial Integrated National High School to host and, at the same time, conduct this kind of very important activity," said Dr. Ramy R. Dalida, Principal IV of GFMINHS, in his opening remarks. "Thank you so much, DOST-STII, for this opportunity na ibinigay niyo po sa amin, sa aming mga teachers at sa aming mga learners."

Balik Scientists honored for their contributions in the Philippine S&T sector

DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. gives the Welcome Remarks during the 9th DOST Balik Scientist Convention at Clark, Pampanga.
A total of 45 Balik Scientists were recognized together with their respective host institutions during the 9th Annual Balik Scientist Program (BSP) Convention on 27 September 2023 at the Quest Plus Conference Center, Clark, Pampanga.
The BSP Convention is an annual gathering of Balik Scientists, host institutions, and stakeholders that showcases the accomplishments and contributions of currently engaged Balik Scientists in the advancement of science, technology, and innovation. In addition to the plenary presentations, this year’s Convention also featured poster exhibits by select Balik Scientists and generated discussions on timely topics related to climate
smart agriculture, health security and health system resilience, and policy and practical applications of artificial intelligence.

Philippines and China Forged Partnership on Joint Research Projects for 2024

On September 18, 2023, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) of the Philippines hosted the 16th Protocol of the Joint Commission of Science and Technology (JCMST) at the Crimson Hotel, Alabang. The delegates from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of the People's Republic of China, led by Vice-Minister Zhang Guangjun, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Undersecretary Leah J. Buendia, Ph.D., for the warm welcome extended by the Philippines and preparations made for the meeting.
The meeting was graced by a keynote video message from the Philippine Ambassador in China, H.E. Ambassador Jaime FlorCruz. He noted that Science, Technology and Innovation are an important driver of the national and global socio-economic developments thus, he hoped that the Philippines and China can continue sharing scientific knowledge and technological innovations. In his keynote video message, Chinese Ambassador in the Philippines, H.E. Ambassador Huang Xilian said that Science and Technology development is a key driving force for human progress. He also suggested that the Philippines and China should focus on further expanding cooperation on people-to-people exchanges, joint laboratory building, technology transfer, and poverty reduction.

DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr. delivers the Philippine Statement at the G77 and China Summit on Current Development Challenges: The Role of STI in Havana, Cuba
16 September 2023 -- Representing the Philippine President, DOST Secretary Renato Solidum, Jr., participated in the G77 and China Summit of Heads of State and Government on current development challenges focusing on the vital role of Science, Technology and Innovation. The two-day Summit was held in Havana, Cuba and was attended by more than one hundred (100) G77 member countries including various International Organization partners.
The G77 is the largest intergovernmental organization of developing countries in the United Nations, which provides the means for the countries of the South to articulate and promote their collective economic interests; enhance joint negotiating capacity on major international issues; and continue pursuing South-South cooperation for development. In this connection, thirty (30) Heads of States and Government from Africa, Asia, and Latin America also joined the in-person general debate.
