CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, La Union – The Ilocos Region is not spared from natural hazards like typhoons and earthquakes, and to mitigate the negative effects of disasters, the Department of Science and Technology Region I (DOST-I) collaborated with other DOST agencies to highlight the importance of knowing the right information at the right time.

Richard T. Pal-laya, Electro-Mechanic Technician, demonstrates the concepts of proper operation and maintenance of the color sorter machine to the workers of Torres Rice Mill.
CABUGAO, Ilocos Sur – Torres Rice Mill, a rice milling firm in Cabugao, Ilocos Sur, integrated the latest sorting technology to improve the quality of their milled rice by capacitating four (4) of their workforce on machine operation and maintenance. The training was provided by the Department of Science and Technology through one of its flagship programs, the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program or SETUP, held last month.

PH’s 1st S&T digital library lands on island school in Albay, two more for Bicol

Easy access to S&T learning has docked on the island of San Miguel in Tabaco, Albay as San Miguel National High School (SMNHS) received the Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosks or STARBOOKS of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). On 05 July 2022, DOST Region V STARBOOKS deployment officer Anthony B. Andes facilitated the orientation and hands-on training for SMNHS.
Developed by the Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII), STARBOOKS is the country’s first digital science library. It is a stand-alone information source designed to reach those with limited or no access to S&T information resources. The project aims to provide contents on Science, Technology and Innovation (ST&I) to geographically-challenged schools and communities throughout the country. STARBOOKS contains numerous digitized S&T resources in various formats (text and video/audio) placed in specially designed “pods” that is set in a user-friendly interface.

The 2022 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipinos were introduced to the public through a virtual press conference on August 4, 2022. Ten awardees of this career-service award—comprising of four teachers, three soldiers, and three police officers—were presented to the members of the media. Each awardee will receive a cash prize of PhP 1 million each (net of tax), a golden medallion, and “The Flame” trophy during the conferment ceremonies in September coinciding with Metrobank’s anniversary celebration.
