The presence of microplastics in various ecosystems like rivers, coastal waters, and even air, due to mismanaged plastic wastes has been a long-standing issue in the country and even globally.
Recently, researchers from Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) have published a study titled, “Urban Road Deposition of Microplastics in Iligan City,” published in the Philippine Journal of Science in 2024, which pioneered in quantifying and characterizing microplastics, especially from road dust in an urban setting.

DOST-PTRI calls on local designers to create innovative Filipino footwear

The Department of Science and Technology- Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) is calling on local designers to develop creative footwear designs that highlight Filipino identity, through storytelling, design, and materials.
As part of the celebration of Philippine Tropical Fabrics Month, with the theme “Weaving Circularity”, the DOST-PTRI recently launched the 10th Filipino Footwear Design Competition, which will be a platform to highlight Filipino creativity and promote the local footwear industry in the country.

Raising disaster preparedness using local knowledge and language

To enhance disaster preparedness in Northern and Central Luzon against earthquakes and tsunamis, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has launched the Disaster Narratives for Experiential Knowledge-based Science Communication, or DANAS Sourcebook, written in the Ilokano language.
The sourcebook was developed by the DOST-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) in collaboration with Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University in La Union, the University of the Philippines – Visayas, and DOST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development.

Advancing food research through NICER laboratory

The Department of Science and Technology launches its Niche Centers in the Region or NICER in Functional Food called Kasanggang NICER in Functional Food Excellence (KNIF2E) Laboratory recently, marking a step forward for functional food research and development (R&D) in Western Visayas.
The DOST in cooperation with the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) and the University of San Agustin (USA) in Iloilo City demonstrated its strong commitment to using local agricultural resources to help advance health and nutrition priorities. The KNIF2E Laboratory aims to advance functional food R&D derived from sugarcane, legumes, lagundi, and cacao. The facility is set to conduct research to develop health-centered food products from the abundant crops in the Western Visayas Region.
