Non-compliance to mass drug administration was a serious obstacle in eliminating lymphatic filariasis, more commonly known as elephantiasis, according to a study funded by the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD). This non-compliance is also serves as a reservoir for the parasite and permits recurrence of infection, added Professor Serafin O. Malecosio, Jr. of the University of the Philippines Visayas and DOST-PCHRD research grantee.
Professor Malecosio presented his study entitled “Compliance Rate and Predictors of Non-Compliance to Mass Drug Administration (MDA) for the Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis in Iloilo Province” during the Health Research Utilization Forum held on February 22, 2016 at the Eon Centennial Hotel in Iloilo City as [art of DOST’s Science Nation Tour.

With the PAGASA modernization program in full swing, it is expected that the agency will be able to further improve and upgrade its weather forecasting by covering the entire Visayas region with the inauguration of the Iloilo Doppler Radar and Synoptic Station located in WESVIARC, Barangay Hamungaya, Jaro, Iloilo City.
The station is one of the facilities that the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) recently put into operation on May 2015 to provide more accurate weather data for a more precise weather forecasting not only in Iloilo but the entireVisayas region; thus ensuring the safety of vulnerable communities from natural hazards like typhoons and floods.

The Iloilo PAGASA Complex now houses the Doppler Radar and Synoptic Station that will provide a wider coverage for monitoring weather disturbances like typhoons in the Visayas region to as far as Masbate in the north and Surigao and Davao in the south. This will also allow “nowcasting” in the different cities and municipalities in the province of Iloilo and the Western Visayas region. (Photo and Text by Rodolfo P. de Guzman/S&T Media Service)
