DOST- ARMM to kick off S&T fair celebration

It is now the Department of Science and Technology- Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao’s (DOST- ARMM) turn to showcase the biggest and latest breakthroughs in S&T in the upcoming celebration of 2015 DOST- ARMM Science and Technology Week.
To run October 8- 10, 2015 at the Alnor Convention Center in Cotabato City, the event will feature DOST’s S&T programs and interventions and local inventions, bearing the theme Philippines: A Science Nation Innovating for Global Competitiveness.
Parallel to the S&T fair is the 2015 ARMM Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits (RICE), a nationwide activity conducted in different regions to recognize the creativity of Filipino inventors in the country.
DOST maps out new energy sources through LiDAR

The government goes beyond hazards maps as the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) ventures out to far-reaching applications of its Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology as it maps out possible renewable energy resources through the PhiLiDAR project.
The PhiLiDAR project is actually an expansion project of the Disaster Risks Exposure and Assessment for Mitigation program which originally aims to produce 3D flood and hazard maps for the 18 major river systems of the country.
With the vast potential of its generated information resources, several applications, including the identification of mining resources and renewable energy, were lined up in the top list for exploration.
PhilAAST fetes outstanding Filipino researchers

For their notable contributions and accomplishments in the field of science and technology, five researchers received awards by the Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology (PhilAAST) during its 64th annual convention held recently at the De La Salle University, Taft Avenue, Manila.
Dr. Grecebio Jonathan D. Alejandro was conferred the Gregorio Y. Zara Award for Basic Research for his pioneering research on Plant Molecular Phylogenetics in the Philippines and the discovery of novel genera and several new endemic species in Rubiaceae (coffee family) such as the Mussaendaustii in honor of UST (University of Santo Tomas). He is a full professor at the UST College of Science and current director of the Office of Graduate Research of the UST Graduate School.
DOST, EVSU launch Food Innovation Center in Tacloban City

Tacloban City, Leyte- Maximizing the potential of available raw materials to strengthen the local food sector in the region is considered by Department of Science and Technology (DOST) as an essential driving force to speed up the current rehabilitation in Yolanda-affected areas in Visayas.
And to achieve that, DOST, together with Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) officially launched the Eastern Visayas-Food Innovation Center (EV-FIC) last September 26, 2015 at EVSU’s main campus in Tacloban City, Leyte.
EV-FIC is a facility that gives opportunities for local residents to develop their ideas and concepts in the field of food processing into innovative and marketable products.
