The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) bannered the many inroads it has created in science, technology and innovations on the occasion of its recent Science Nation Tour for Region VII in Cebu City.

Now on its 5th leg, the Science Nation Tour is a nationwide roadshow highlighting the many DOST Filipino inventions, state-of-the-art technologies and innovations geared at improving global competitiveness, attaining inclusive growth and cultivating a culture of science and technology (S&T) in the Philippines.

DOST aims to provide innovative, cost-effective and appropriate technologies for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to aid them in developing world-class products, said DOST Assistant Secretary Raymund  E. Liboro in his keynote address at the Technology and Innovation Exposition, one of the many activities in the roadshow.

Breakthroughs in the field of information and communications technology (ICT) have definitely changed the way we live.  We can communicate instantaneously with our loved ones who live abroad, study or work from the comforts of our home, do business with anyone from any part of the world, shop or pay bills online, and connect to anyone via social networking, among others.  But for some people, the impact of ICT in their lives is life-changing.

A case in point is Rhea Althea Guntalilib who suffered from a rare retinal disease that led to her blindness.

A young artist demonstrates how the Gx3 Garneth:The Original Hand Painting Multiplier Device operates during the Technology and Innovation Expo of the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) ongoing Science Nation Tour Central Visayas leg in Cebu City. An entry to the 2015 Central Visayas Regional Invention Contest and Exhibit, the device makes it possible for the artist to paint or draw multiple original figures simultaneously, making the technology ideal for businesses engaged in the creation of original handpainted products. It consists of multiple brush holders which help the artist to control his strokes so that they have identical movements. Gx3 Garneth was invented by Engr. Nono S. Camomot of Consolacion, Cebu and is one of several inventions currently on exhibit at Science Nation Tour which runs until June 20, 2015. Calixto T. Lulo of the Department of Science and Technology-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) demonstrates the charcoal briquetting technology to LGU officials of Los Baños, Laguna during their recent visit. Los Baños is eyeing the technology as a livelihood option for local communities. Charcoal briquettes (below) are compacted masses of fuel made from a mixture of charcoal fines from carbonized agro-forest wastes like rice hull, sawdust, coffee bean hull and starch, and molded under pressure.  They offer an alternative to the more expensive LPG, kerosene, and electricity. They are also easy to handle and ignite, slow burning, and emit more intense heat per unit volume.
