DOST helps keep candle livelihood project burning

The future burns bright for a church-based organization in Sta. Cruz, Marinduque as it expands the operation of its candle production livelihood project with the help of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
The Batayang Pamayanang Kristiyano (BKP) Holy Cross Parish Chapter started candle production in March 2011. Then, they were producing an average of 510 (both votive and standing) pieces of candles from 150 kgs of paraffin wax per month which were supplied to the local parish. The group was earning an average gross income of P 10,000 per month.

DOST’s nanotech lab open to the public on July 1

Pinoy techies and science enthusiasts will learn to appreciate nanotechnology as they familiarize themselves with its products when NanoLab, one of the few nanotechnology research labs in the Philippines, opens its doors to the public on July 1, 2015.
Nanotechnology is the study and manipulation of matter at a scale of about 1 to 100 nanometers. It involves characterization, design and production of structures, devices, and systems with unique properties by fine-tuning the physical, chemical, mechanical, and optical properties of materials at the nanoscale.
A project of the Department of Science and Technology-Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI), NanoLab provides R&D opportunities and technical services to local industries via world-class equipment and devices.
Lubao workers learn how to apply bamboo finish via DOST training

Furniture and handicraft workers at a Lubao, Pampanga-based bamboo-making hub have honed their skillset in bamboo finishing and thus look forward to better saleability of their products, thanks to the Department of Science and Technology - Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI).
FPRDI recently conducted a three-day training on bamboo finishing at the Sta. Catalina Bamboo Negosyo Village, a spin-off project of the Province of Pampanga through DTI’s “industry cluster approach.”

DOST science roadshow off to Cebu for Region VII leg

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) brings its nationwide science roadshow “Science Nation Tour:Agham na Ramdam” to the Queen City of the South as it makes its Central Visayas stop from June 18-20, 2015.
Science Nation is slated to tour all 17 regions of the Philippines to highlight the benefits of DOST programs and technologies in the region while demonstrating the inherent role of science and technology (S&T) in daily life.
The three-day event opens at the Cebu City Marriott Hotel with the Technology and Innovation Exposition featuring the 2015 Regional Invention Contest and Exhibit (RICE) and the Entrepreneurship Conference. The latter will tackle the role of S&T innovation in raising the competitiveness of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
