DOST MOUNTS INT’L SCIENCE FAIR  Student delegates from the Philippines and their mentors (above) proudly wave small Philippine flags during the opening ceremony of the 2nd Philippine International Science Fair (PISF) staged by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Science High School System (DOST-PSHS) in partnership with the First Pacific Leadership Academy. The local delegation is composed of students and teachers from the PSHS campuses and other science schools in the country. Delegates from Sweden (below), Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore are also participating in the biennial fair in Antipolo City. With the theme “Innovate to Mitigate”, the PISF tackles environment and climate change issues via workshops, study tour, teacher’s forum, and prototyping sessions with experts. The PISF serves as a ramp-up to DOST’s National Science and Technology Week  at SMX Convention Center from July 24-28, 2015 where PSHS will hold a robotics/interactive science exhibit by students. Solar panels now give power to office buildings of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), a move to put forward DOST’s commitment to promote renewable, clean, and green energy resources.

Partnering with DOST in this latest development is the Philippine National Oil Company Renewables Corporation (PNOC-RC) which encourages all government offices, agencies and departments in Metro Manila to adopt solar power as an  alternative source of energy and to use green technology to protect the environment

It isn’t too late for anyone to try new technologies anywhere. These elderly mallgoers in Butuan City prove this as they squeeze in time to check out the country’s first digital science library during their malling spree. A project of the Department of Science and Technology-Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII), the digital library is called STARBOOKS (Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk System) which was recently launched at the mall. STARBOOKS boasts of free S&T materials in various formats, is user friendly and does not require  Internet connectivity. STARBOOKS will also be featured during DOST’s National Science and Technology Week from July 24-28, 2015 at SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia, Pasay City. (Text by Joy M. Having an entrepreneurial mindset early on can be an added advantage for Filipino students. At the same time, it can also fill the gap in areas where there is a lack of investments like in the provinces, said Monchito Ibrahim, deputy executive director of the Department of Science and Technology-Information and Communications Technology Office (DOST-ICT Office).

Certain places in the country lack investment opportunities for various reasons. Among these are security issues, lack of or limited infrastructure, and unsuitability of its geographical location.

ICT-based startups, however, are not heavily dependent on location, according to Ibrahim. Thus, promoting technopreneurship or technology entrepreneurship among engineering and ICT students is an effective way to bring economic progress to areas not reached by investment opportunities. It maximizes the potential of untapped ICT talent in the provinces as well.
