DOST-PSHS Now Accepting NCE for Incoming Grade 7 Applicants for SY 2016-2017

The DOST- Philippine Science High School System (PSHS) is now accepting applicants for the National Competitive Examination (NCE) for incoming Grade 7, for School Year 2016-2017.
A grade 6 pupil from a duly recognized school by the Department of Education who meets the following criteria is eligible to apply for the DOST- PSHS NCE: S/he must: 1) have final grade of 85% or better in Science and Mathematics, evidenced by the student’s report card, if the student’s grades in Science or Math are below 85%, then, s/he must provide evidence that s/he belongs to the upper 10% of the class; 2) be a Filipino citizen with no pending application as immigrant to any foreign country; 3) be born on or after July 1, 2001; 4) be in good health and fit to undergo a rigorous academic program; 5) have at least a satisfactory rating (or its equivalent) in his/her Character Rating in his/her report card (SY 2014-2015); and 6) not have taken the NCE previously.
Application requirements include: Fully accomplished Application Form in two (2) copies; Two (2) identical recent 1x1 ID pictures; Non-refundable test fee (Php 100 for private schools, free for public schools); Copy of report card (SY 2014-2015); and If the final grades in Science or Math are below 85%, certification or proof that the child belongs to the upper 10% of the class.

DOST-funded organominerals technology helps deodorize Boracay’s wastewater

Boracay Island has long been the subject of issues regarding wastewater, drainage systems, and residual solid waste that fill the air with noxious odor. While there are regulations governing waste treatment in the island, the problem persists due to an inadequate treatment system especially with the continuous influx of tourists to the island.
Boracay may have found the answer to this problem through Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST)-developed Eco-Sep, an organomineral treatment used in a self-sustaining and portable wastewater treatment system.

DOST chief urges S &T scholars to contribute to nation building

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Mario G. Montejo recently told DOST scholars to “equip themselves with more knowledge… (and) strengthen their belief that science and technology would make a huge difference to improve the lives of every Filipino.”
During the recent scholars conference held at Hotel Jen in Pasay City, Sec. Montejo stressed that science and technology remains to be the important engine of the country. It is S&T that drive industry competitiveness, accelerate the delivery of government services, and enhance the country’s capacity in emerging technologies, he said.
“ With the developing challenges of globalization and tough competition in the market place, S&T innovation and research should be a priority to ensure our nation’s global competitiveness”, Montejo underscored.

Filipino S&T workers double in 20 years, according to DOST study

The number of Filipino professionals in science and technology (S&T) doubled from 1990 to 2010, with nursing, midwifery, and engineering registering the most number of professionals each.
This was revealed in a publication by the Department of Science and Technology-Science and Education Institute (DOST-SEI) titled “Human Resources in Science and Technology in the Philippines,” launched on April 22, 2015 at the Astoria Plaza Hotel, Pasig City.
The publication contains estimates on the country’s S&T professionals, established by a study conducted by SEI which utilized National Statistics Office census data for 1990, 2000, and 2010, among others
