DOST to kick off int’l science fair on June 1

The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Science High School (DOST-PSHS) System, in partnership with First Pacific Leadership Academy (FPLA) will host the 2nd Philippine International Science Fair (PISF) which will take off this coming June 1, 2015 in Antipolo City.
To date, six countries namely Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Sweden have confirmed their participation with three student participants from each country. Sixteen science-oriented high schools from the Department of Education and the 12 PSHS campuses will also be participating in the fair.
This five-day, biennial event, which will run from May 31 up to June 4, aims to promote a culture of science with the theme, “Innovate to Mitigate.”
DOST’s STARBOOKS wows Eastern Visayas librarians

“Ang ganda pala! (It is so nice!)” a librarian exclaimed as the contents of STARBOOKS splashed onscreen, and participants on a hands-on demonstration browsed over the rich contents.
STARBOOKS, or Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Station, is the country’s first digital science and technology (S&T) library. It can be accessed offline, making it ideal for students and researchers in areas still unreached by the Internet and have no access to the latest S&T materials.

Regional Director Edgar Esperancilla of the Department of Science and Technology – VIII received 53 STARBOOKS disks from Robelyn Cruz of DOST-Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII). The disks, pre-installed with STARBOOKS contents, are ready for setting up in various schools and communities in the region. Developed by DOST-STII , STARBOOKS or Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Station, is the country’s first digital science and technology (S&T) library. DOST gives fault system Atlas to local gov’t units

The Department of Science and Technology- Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) launched and distributed the Valley Fault System (VFS) Atlas to local government officials recently at the PHIVOLCS office in Diliman, Quezon City.
The Valley Fault System (VFS) Atlas is a handbook of large scale maps showing in detail areas traversed by the Valley Fault System, an active fault system in the Greater Metro Manila Area (GMMA). The fault system has two fault traces: the 10 km long East Valley Fault in Rizal and the 100 km long West Valley Fault that runs through different cities and towns in Bulacan, Rizal, Metro Manila, Cavite and Laguna. The West Valley Fault can generate a large earthquake which poses threat to people’s lives, buildings, infrastructure, and livelihood.
