Forester and environmentalist tied for DOST’s 2015 environmental science award

The 2015 NAST Environmental Science Award (NESA) went to two distinguished experts during the paper presentation of finalists and awarding ceremony on April 22, 2015 at the New World Manila Bay Hotel. The National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), the country’s foremost recognition body, conferred the award in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
Mr. Arsenio B. Ella, Scientist III of the DOST- Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI) and Dr. Severino G. Salmo, III, assistant professor and chairperson of the Department of Environmental Science, Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) tied for the Award’s first prize for the second time since the inception of the award in 2001.

DOST CHIEF TOURS JUSTICE HEAD TO FOOD INNOVATION CENTER IN CAGAYAN VALLEY | (Top photo) Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Mario G. Montejo tours Justice Secretary Leila de Lima to the DOST Food Innovation Center (FIC) at the Cagayan State University-Carig Campus Tuguegarao City recently. The visit was one of the activities during the Cagayan Valley leg of “Science Nation: Agham na Ramdam” in which Sec. de Lima was appointed as one of the Science Ambassadors of the region. A hub of innovation and technical support services for the processed food industry, the FIC features a processing and packaging equipment, research and testing laboratory and technology information system. The facility also provides training, consultancy, packaging and labeling services. Other photos show some of the products developed with assistance from the FIC. “Science Nation: Agham na Ramdam” is a DOST nationwide roadshow highlighting the Department’s various programs. Included here are FICs that will help raise the quality of local products to make the products more competitive locally and globally. DOST funds community empowerment program to So. Leyte university

Bontoc, Southern Leyte – Department of Science and Technology – VIII Regional Director Edgar Esperancilla recently turned over P400,000 funding to Southern Leyte State University – Bontoc Campus for the project “Strengthening and Monitoring of Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) Program in Region 8”. Said project was conceptualized by SLSU-Bontoc and DOST 8 in the last quarter of CY 2014.
Developed by the DOST, the CEST program aims to provide livelihood and alleviate poverty in communities. Campus Administator Madel Calva received the funding.

COUNTRY’S FIRST SCIENCE DIGITAL LIB BY DOST NOW IN CAPIZ U. The Department of Science and Technology-Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII) recently handed over 35 units of STARBOOKS (Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Station) to Capiz State University (CAPSU) in Roxas City, Capiz. A project of STII, STARBOOKS is the first science digital library in the Philippines. It can be accessed without Internet connection and contains text, video and audio materials from local and international sources Including Britannica Ultimate Encyclopedia. The 35 units will be distributed to ten CAPSU campuses namely Roxas City (main campus), Burias, Dumarao, Sigma, Pilar, Pontevedra, Mambusao, Dayao, Sapian, and Tapaz campuses.
