“We know more about our universe than our planet earth.”

This was the surprising revelation of Dr. Arvin C. Diesmos, Scientist III of the National Museum, during the recently held “First Science Congress of Caloocan” organized by Association of Science Department Heads of Caloocan in partnership with the Young Christian Physicist Society of the Philippines, Scientific Career System and the Philippine Association of Career Scientists, Inc.

He explained that scientists’ estimates of the number of species on earth vary from 5 million to 100 million—with a very wide margin of error. Likewise, many of our scientific endeavors are focused on taxonomy, which pertains to naming and classification of species, while our knowledge of how these organisms live are very limited.

Brighter employment prospects await at least 800 individuals who have received free training for CNC Tool Programming and Operations from the Department of Science and Technology- Metals Industry Research and Development Center (DOST-MIRDC).

MIRDC’s training program is part of DOST’s push for industry competitiveness in the metals and engineering sector and in accordance with Secretary Mario G. Montejo’s directive to address the lack of workers with this skill in the manufacturing industry.

Science Secretary Mario Montejo is directing all agencies involved in Yolanda rehabilitation to secure all scientific information they need at the Yolanda Rehabilitation Scientific Information Center (YORINFOCENTER). Located at the University of the Philippines National Engineering Center n Diliman, Quezon City, the said Center makes it easier for other government agencies, including local government units, and humanitarian organizations to get scientific data that could help them in rehabilitating Eastern Visayas and its environs affected by the typhoon.

Since its launch on May 17 this year, YORINFOCENTER has facilitated the release to stakeholders of scientific data, such as like LiDAR topographic maps and multi-hazard maps from both the Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Mines and Geosciences Bureau and the DOST, and the latest satellite images of the Yolanda-devastated areas.

The local information technology-business process management (IT-BPM) industry, a leading economic driver expecting $18 billion in revenues by the end of 2014 yet hounded by climate issues, will benefit from disaster preparedness management to help boost its productivity, according to Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Mario G. Montejo

Speaking at the 2014 International IT-BPM Summit last October 13 at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel, Sec. Montejo assured DOST’s full commitment to the industry and pointed out that the availability of up-to-date and real-time weather information and resources enable industry investors to map out better strategies and manage their operations more effectively.
