“Disaster imagination”: DOST’s remedy for disaster readiness

Imagine.
According to Dr. Renato U. Solidum, director of the Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS), imagination is the best remedy in battling fierce disasters which seem commonplace nowadays even outside the Philippines.
“Possible future hazards and its effects in localities and the whole region must be imagined to craft and implement appropriate solutions. You have the most important role to be not injured, to be alive, during a major event,” Solidum stated during his presentation before provincial governors, mayors, disaster risk reduction managers, and city planning officers in the recent CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, and Iloilo series of DOST’s information and education campaign (IEC) recently.

Summer may be the best time to eliminate the breeding sites of dengue-causing mosquitoes to prevent a dengue epidemic in the coming rainy season.
This was revealed by Dr. Frances Edillo of the University of San Carlos in her talk during the 32nd anniversary celebration of the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD).

DOST vows to improve delivery of weather information

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) vows to improve its delivery of weather information as new study shows that public knowledge was insufficient to fully understand concepts on weather, climate, and disaster issues.
The study, which was conducted by the Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII) and Project NOAH Strategic Communications Interventions Project Team with the help of DOST- National Capital Region titled "Understanding and Appreciation of Weather Information" and was revealed in the form of a poster presentation during the 81st National Research Council of the Philippines (DOST-NRCP) General Membership Assembly and International Scientific Conference dubbed as Future Earth, Future Philippines held at the Manila Hotel March 26-27, is aimed at measuring and understanding the public perceptions and familiarization on weather information and delivery.

Science for Safer Communities” at the Romblon State University, Odiongan, Romblon on March 20 and 21.
