DOST, MSU-IIT introduce foam innovation for oil spill cleanups

A Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Balik Scientist featured a foam technology to solve oil spills.
In an event held on 11 May 2023 by the Mindanao State University - Iligan Instiute of Technology (MSU-IIT), a bio-based polyurethane foam labeled as “CocoFlexSorb” is presented to the public. This technology, unlike those available in the market, has superior oil absorption capacity and can absorb different types of oil from light, vegetable, kerosene, engine, and bunker oil.
The CocoFlexSorb may also be reused forty (40) times and is not harmful to the environment.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) led by Undersecretary for Research and Development Leah Buendia met with officials and members of the (EU-ABC) and the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) on Tuesday, 23 May 2023 at the DOST Central Office to discuss the Philippine science, technology and innovation (STI) plans, priorities and programs and opportunities to further enhance trade, investment and economic cooperation in view of the recommencement of the Philippines-European Union (EU) Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations.
The EU-ABC Delegation led by Chairman Martin Hayes, and ECCP Executive Director Chris Humphrey consists of business representatives from various multinational European companies across different industries such as pharmaceuticals and healthcare, logistics and supply chain, manufacturing services, among others.

The researchers suggest further microbial and natural product (NP) exploration of volcanoes and hot springs - underexplored habitats - that will undoubtedly yield a huge repertoire of novel and biologically active compounds.

Implementation of a universal health care system in the Philippines may come to fruition with the issuance in June 2021 of Executive Order No. 138, which paves the way for devolution of health and other public services from the national government to local government units (LGUs).
For this strategy to work, Ernesto D. Garilao, Chairperson of the Zuellig Family Foundation (ZFF), recommended capacitating local officials through leadership training, incentivizing LGUs to collaborate with the private sector, and developing policies to ensure stakeholder inclusivity.
