“We do not need to compete with google.”
This is what Mary Grace P. Golfo-Barcelona, Dean, School of Library and Information Studies, University of the Philippines Diliman said during a webinar on Nutrinet: Thriving during the Pandemic, as part of Nutrition Research Information Network’s (NUTRINET) 35th anniversary.
Barcelona said that the challenge for the librarians and libraries in the era of digitization is how to make reliable and relevant resources that are available online more accessible to the researchers, and to make what’s available in prints that are not available online be digitized and transformed to formats that are more readily accessible to the users.

Solidum urges “earthly” public servants to have the “heart”

Newly installed secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr. talked about the “earthly” attributes of public servants in his message during his first official flag ceremony as the new head of the department at the DOST Science Complex in Bicutan, Taguig City on 15 August 2022.
Popularly known as the country’s “fault finder,” Secretary Solidum rose from the ranks starting at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) in an entry-level position as Science Research Specialist I in 1984. He then became its director in 2003 and eventually became DOST Undersecretary for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation in 2017 and Undersecretary for Scientific and Technical Services in 2019.

Prestigious science journals publish DOST-FPRDI papers

The oldest scientific journal in the Philippines, the Philippine Journal of Science, published five of the nine DOST-FPRDI papers.
Over the last one-and-a-half years, several scientific papers written or co-written by Department of Science and Technology-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) researchers have been featured in some of the world's most notable academic journals.
The said periodicals are all listed under Clarivate Analytics (formerly ISI or Institute for Scientific Information), a publishing service that accredits journals based on strict standards of quality and whose ratings are used worldwide as a measure of a publication’s prestige and impact.
