Farmers get a boost in cassava production thru DOST training

Participants and organizers take a short breather during the three-day training on cassava production.
Cassava, a staple on Filipino tables, is a versatile crop that can be made into a variety of products. It is a major source of livelihood for farmers in the upland Tanay, Rizal with a bountiful harvest, giving growers a sizeable margin for profit.
And to enhance the knowledge and skills of the farmers in cassava production, the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office IV-A (DOST IV-A) in the partnership with the Department of Agrarian Reform-Rizal Province (DAR-Rizal) jointly conducted a three-day training on cassava production with the Organization of Agrarian Reform Beneficiary Farmers of Inalsan, Inc. (OARBFII) held from 4-6, May 2022.

Resilient Education Information Infrastructure for the New Normal (REIINN) project has commenced the construction of its first LokaLTE Base Station in San Andres Elementary School, Tanay, Rizal, on 24 May 2021.

Paper-based device to help SMEs measure beverage’s health content

A cheap, user-friendly, and robust paper-based device that can be used by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in determining the total polyphenol content (TPC) of tea-based beverages – specifically, sweet potato leaf extract (SPLE)-based tea beverage products - was developed by researchers from the University of the Philippines.
In their study on “Paper-based Device for the Detection and Quantification of Total Polyphenols in Plant-based Beverages for Potential Use in Quality Assurance Purposes,” a team of researchers saw the need for local manufacturers to assess the polyphenol content of their product to ensure food quality. Since such assessment devices are often costly, the team developed a similar device which can be both reliable and affordable for the SMEs.

Gawad ALUNIG x DALUMAT: DOST-TAPI’s fervor for science journalism

Local stories of science and technology from across the country were the champions of the very first Gawad ALUNIG x DALUMAT organized by the Technology Application and Promotion Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-TAPI) on 13 May 2022 at the Novotel Manila Araneta City, Quezon City.
In line with the Department’s campaign to bring science to the people, DOST-TAPI through the Applied Communications Unit for Inventors (ACU-i) welcomed entries from various school publications and local correspondents nationwide.
