Lagonglong abaca farmers receive tech assistance from DOST-X

Although the Bicol region, specifically the province of Catanduanes, remains as the top producer of abaca or Manila hemp with 52,493 hectares devoted to it, Lagonglong, Misamis Oriental is aspiring to capitalize on the huge market potential of abaca that has both domestic and international demand.
To support the Lagonglong abaca farmers’ dream, the Department of Science and Technology – Region XI (DOST-X) recently turned over a check amounting to Php 1.3 million to the Local Government Unit of Lagonglong (LGU-Lagonglong) in Misamis Oriental on April 14, 2021, via an online conference, for a joint abaca processing project.

2021 VIRTUAL MOA SIGNING WITH PARTNERS
From math Olympiads to robotics competitions, Filipino students have been consistently making their mark in the international arena thanks to the tireless efforts of the Department of Science and Technology - Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) and its educational partners—some of whom have been the agency’s allies for well over two decades.
The Institute and its partners recently reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing ceremony on 14 April 2021. The entire event was held online, a poignant reminder of the unusual circumstances brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as of the determination and creativity of the various agencies to overcome these challenges.

E-Nutribun to roll out in Antique to help curb malnutrition

According to the Antique Provincial Planning and Development Office (PDDO), Antique is already identified as the province in Western Visayas with the highest malnutrition incidence at 26% in 2015. This has worsened since the pandemic because of the limited access to healthy foods because of strict implementation of border restriction and travel ban.

Dr. Franz de Leon is new DOST-ASTI director

Dr. Franz Asunta de Leon, an associate professor from the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute of the University of the Philippines Diliman, was appointed as the new director of the Department of Science and Technology-Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI).
