“To the young researchers, if you have the luxury to do what you want to do, write what you want to write, and I hope you will not get boxed in a particular way, because you have to write in a particular way, I hope that, that opportunity will be open for everyone. It’s not just there. You also look for it.” This was one of the inspiring messages of Dr. Teresa S. Encarnacion Tadem, Ph.D., a political science professor at the University of the Philippines (UP) during the first webisode of iShare, where she recounted her journey on being sidetracked from her original dream of working for the United Nations, and on finding comfort and fulfillment in doing research and writing, initially at the Third World Studies Center of UP.

Aquaculture scientists discussed their take on local freshwater fishing sustainability in a webinar entitled “Commercially-caught Freshwater Fishes in the Philippines: Status, Issues, and Recommendations,” that was broadcast on 15 January 2021.

The event, organized by the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-NAST), was moderated by Dr. Angel B. Encarnacion, Senior Fishing Regulation Officer of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

The DigiHub FabLab Davao bagged 3rd Place in the Fabsiklaban Competition of the Fabrication Festival 4 (FabFest 4) hosted by the Department of Trade and Industry Region 7.

Focused on the theme, “Fabricating the New Normal”, DigiHub’s entry features the “Mirror Board”, an innovative device fabricated by the team to provide the teachers or instructors a tool that can help them adapt the new way of conducting their classes which are now done online.

The year 2020, despite the challenges brought by natural and health hazards in a global scale, proved to be a defining moment for the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

The Science Department stepped up amidst the pandemic and its different initiatives have never been much sought after in the larger scale of things. In fact, the DOST, for its part, recalibrated some of its research and development (R&D) programs to give way to more pressing concerns in the country’s fight against COVID-19 while continuing other activities, true to its mandate, to address other socio-economic concerns using science, technology, and innovation (STI).
