Filipino researchers are using artificial intelligence (AI) and 3D printing technologies to enhance bone tissue repair, providing a more accessible and affordable solution for bone- related challenges caused by aging, infections, and accidents.

Aiming to empower patients and doctors in selecting the optimal bone repair material based on medical needs and affordability, this project offers a more viable alternative to existing methods by providing enhanced performance for complex bone regeneration using 3D printing technology to craft bone scaffolds with tunable shapes.

Led by Dr. Erwin P. Enriquez of the Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU), and supported by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD), the team leverages on an international collaboration with researchers from the Vellore Institute of Technology in India, that specializes in additive manufacturing, AI-assisted design, and bio-nanotechnology using 3D printing technology.

In a concerted effort to bring scientific information and technological advancements closer to the people, the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. 1 (DOST-1) collaborated with DZAG Radyo Pilipinas Agoo to present the 1st Episode of the radio program titled "Tekno Presyensya: Syensya ken Teknolohiya para kadagiti Umili" on 11 January 2024. The event took place via the Zoom platform and Facebook Live and was broadcast live on DZAG Radyo Pilipinas Agoo FM radio.

The episode centered around the celebration of the 2024 National Time Consciousness Week, themed "G na G, Oras Pinas para sa Bagong Pilipinas", featuring Engr. Mario M. Raymundo, Chief of the Astronomical Publication and Planetarium Unit of DOST-Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (DOST-PAGASA). The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), led by Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr., concluded a visit to three (3) Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) projects in the Ilocos Region on 10 January 2024 in Agoo, La Union and 12 January 12 in Tubao, La Union and Sta, Barbara, Pangasinan, respectively.

 

The objective of the visit was to showcase the achievements and overall development of the enterprises facilitated by the technical and technological support provided by the DOST. This will serve as showcase of the possible benefits of science, technology, and innovation in improving business operations.
