The Department of Science and Technology (DOST)–National Capital Region represented by (from left) Director Dr. Teresita C. Fortuna and DOST Assistant Secretary and Program Manager for Countryside Development Dr. Urduja A. Tejada, and the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship (PCE)–Go Negosyo represented by Executive Director Ramon Lopez and Victor Madlangbayan (3rd from left and extreme right) recently formalized their partnership for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the country with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. With the partnership, MSMEs will receive a more focused and well-rounded assistance from DOST-NCR and PCE which aims to help address poverty by promoting entrepreneurship. Meanwhile, DOST assists MSMEs via its Small Enterprise Upgrading Program or SETUP which provides funding, technology upgrade, and training. A project that aims to detect and prevent the spread of shrimp pathogens, an infectious agent that can cause disease to its host, is now nearing completion. 

This was announced by Dr. Cynthia P. Saloma, director of the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology in UP–Diliman during the Science and Technology Forum on Aquatic Biotechnology at the recent National Biotechnology Week in SM Dasmariñas, Cavite.

The Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) Science and Technology (S&T) Fair for the Mindanao Cluster got underway in Zamboanga City from December 3-5, 2015 with focus on S&T’s impacts on the rubber, mining and food industries, including halal.

The fair showcased the many benefits of DOST’s Small Enterprise Upgrading Program or SETUP via project visits to program beneficiaries Philippine Pioneer Rubber Product Corp. (PPRPC) and Monmon Bakeshoppe and Snack Haus in Zamboanga.

The Science Education Institute (SEI) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) named Taguig Integrated School and CP Sta. Teresa Elementary School as two of the Most Promising School for Implementers of Project HOTS or Hands on Teaching and Learning of Science.

Project HOTS is a professional development program of SEI which aims to enable teachers to design and develop science lessons incorporating an inquiry-based activity, facilitate an inquiry-based activity, and improve the lesson based on pupil’s response or lesson study. It is a means to change the focus of teaching from a teacher-centered classroom to one that is student-centered.
