The Commission on Audit (COA) has lauded the Department of Science and Technology’s STARBOOKS or Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Station, the first digital science library in the Philippines which can run without Internet connection.

In its final report of 2014, the COA indicated that STARBOOKS is one innovation that merits praise because it provides opportunities to deprived but deserving students in the countryside and gives them access to information on S&T for free.

“Looking at this program, bringing this library to far-flung areas is very noble as far as COA is concerned,” stated Karlo Almonidovar, Commission on Audit supervising auditor assigned at the DOST.  “The social impact of STARBOOKS is very important because this addresses one of the strategic objectives of the government which is poverty alleviation through education, and we approve of it, that’s why COA is called ‘partner in development.’”

Robots such as these were the main attractions in the Robotics and Science Interactive Exhibit organized by the Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Science High School System (DOST-PSHS) during DOST’s National Science and Technology Week held last July 24-28 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.  Students from different PSHS campuses all over the country showed off their own robotic creations like this pair of bots and performed interesting science experiments for the audience, consisting mostly of kids.  (S&T Media Service)

Kids slug it out for the top prizes in Clash of Class – an annual competition for elementary and high school students featuring exciting science-based games organized by the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) Science Education Institute and Philippine Science High School System in cooperation with Manila Ocean Park. The games involved poking sharpened pencils into a bag of water without causing it to leak (top), creating a model jellyfish that will not readily sink (middle), and pouring different liquids into a glass to form a density tower, among others. Clash of Class was one of the activities in DOST’s recent National Science and Technology Week. Baclaran Elementary School Unit II emerged as overall champion in the elementary division. A student inscribes messages on a digital interactive board using only her finger at the exhibit area of the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) Philippine Science High School System during DOST’s National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) recently held at SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. The interactive board is equipped with sensors, allowing anyone to “write,” and “delete” what was written, by simply whipping his hand through the board. It is among the innovative technologies developed by students from Philippine Science High School (PISAY) and exhibited in NSTW. (S&T Media Service)
