(Top) Sen. Loren Legarda proudly beams as she tries on a cotton vest dyed with natural indigo - a gift from the Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) which developed the dye - during the recent launching of PTRI’s Innovation Center for Yarns and Textiles in Taguig City. The P54M facility is expected to revitalize the local textile industry by producing yarns of piña, banana, and other indigenous fabrics and make these more accessible to local handloom weavers and commercial millers, as well as include the fabrics in local clothing brands’ product lines. 11 CARAGA schools now have DOST's STARBOOKS

Butuan City, Caraga - A globally recognized digital science library developed by the Department of Science and Technology-Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII), is now being used as a handy research tool for students at 11 high schools in Eastern Mindanao.
Recently, DOST-STII launched STARBOOKS or Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly-Operated Kiosk Stations in the said sites during the Butuan City, CARAGA Region stop of the Department’s national roadshow dubbed Science Nation: Agham na Ramdam.
STARBOOKS is a user-friendly digital library of science and technology (S&T) information which may be accessed without Internet connection. It is the first science digital library in the Philippines, containing thousands of S&T resources in various formats - text and audio/ video - placed in especially designed pods set in a user-friendly interface.
New DOST facility to help put tropical fabrics in mainstream market

Clothing made from tropical fabrics such as piña and banana are usually used only during weddings, baptisms, burials and other special occasions. The Philippine Textile Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PTRI) however is keen on making tropical fabrics more mainstream.
The establishment of PTRI’s P54 M Innovation Center for Yarns and Textiles (ICYT) that will produce yarns customized to customers’ and industry needs is a step closer to this goal which is part of the bigger objective of revitalizing the textile industry in the country.
