Just days after the recent eruption of the Kanlaon volcano, the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) has launched two digital tools to assist disaster managers in monitoring active volcanoes in the country.
During the last leg of the 2025 Handa Pilipinas: Innovations in Climate and Disaster Resilience Visayas leg, organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through its newly established DOST-Negros Island Region, the DOST-PHIVOLCS launched the Volcano Observation Live Capture Net or VOLCAN and the VolcanoPH Info App at the SMX Convention Center, SM City Bacolod, Negros Occidental.

BACOLOD CITY — As the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) concluded the final leg of Handa Pilipinas 2025 in Bacolod City, the spotlight turned to a homegrown innovation that has been making waves across local government units (LGUs) in the region—Project SIGNAL.
Project SIGNAL, which stands for Strategic Incident Georeferencing for Nationwide Alertness, is an incident reporting and monitoring system designed for LGUs to track and respond to emergencies from landslides and floods to vehicular accidents and even medical emergencies.

Negros Island students pitch techs to boost disaster resilience in communities

Disaster preparedness has become a priority for everyone, as students in the Negros Island Region contribute their ideas to foster safer and more resilient communities through technology.
During the last leg of the 2025 Handa Pilipinas: Innovations in Climate and Disaster Resilience Visayas leg—organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through its newly created DOST-Negros Island Region—held in SMX Convention Center, SM City Bacolod, Negros Occidental from October 26-29, 2025, students ran their pitching skills and showcase their creativity in developing technologies at the Brains and Breakthrough Pitching Competition.

Regional innovators vie in Wadhwani pitching competition to develop solutions addressing common gaps in communities

To address common challenges assessed in every community, innovators at the regional and provincial offices of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) developed ‘smart’ solution prototypes through the Wadhwani technology pitching competition held on October 21, 2025.
DOST-Caraga region said the competition is the second installment of the first Cohort which began in January 2025 through the DOST-Wadhwani Technopreneurship Program—a partnership between the DOST and Wadhwani Operating Foundation launched in November 2024.
Under this partnership, nearly 400 DOST employees underwent an intensive three-month training focused on upskilling and reskilling participants in entrepreneurship.
